Week 11, Nov 6, Nov 7, Nov 8, Nov 9, Nov 10
Nov 6
Trying to get back in the swing of things after being sick, today we
- worked in our Spelling pull-a-tab dry erase book
- River worked on her letter to her penpal Sophia, we've found this to be a fun way for her to practice writing, storytelling, and using some motor skills
- did a US floor puzzle and talked about different regions, like the South along Mexico, (River insisted we put on Coco), mid-west, North, Native territories and National Parks, the 13 colonies, where we live, and where we'd like to visit.
- introduced number value (BQ178)
- played a number value hat game, building numbers
- watercoloring painting - researched beach watercolor paintings and made our own, featuring migrating birds and fish. While the kids painted, I read excerpts of "Migration: Incredible Animal Journeys", what a good book! We read about south African elephants, Christmas Island crabs, and bar-headed geese. And golden eagles. Ha!
Nov 7
Today we met with our Diamond co-op group. River started with about an hour of gym; thirty minutes of structured games and 30 min of free time. Then we spent the morning rehearsing our play. River did so great! The group had the set props positioned and got together their costumes, which I think really helped set the play. After that, River had lunch with her friends.
Nov 8
Today we started the day using our new oil pastels - the kids picked their own coloring pages to print, River practiced blending and shading - and reading some more excerpts from "Migration Incredible Animal Journeys", about swallows, humpback whales, emperor penguins, and carabou.
In the evening River went to a STEAM challenge at the library. She played with snap circuits, made pins with a machine, built structures with marshmallows and toothpicks, and did the dry erase/plate/water experiment.
Nov 9
Today we used our Awesome Engineering Activities book and did a paperclip helicopter experiment sheet and a cardboard/pipe cleaner maze. Our lesson was on gravity, air resistance, force, and lift.
Nov 10
Today we met with our Barefoot University group for a holiday potluck and field games. The kids tried to work on a waterwheel activity but didn't get to get into it, I'm hoping to do one this week. The kids played fun team-building games like tug-o-war, jump rope, sack races, and a corn shucking race. Afterwards we met some Clydesdale marshall horses, played on old tracters and explored the village at Carousel Park.
In the afternoon we went to Touch-a-Truck at the library. As the event started the firefighters had an actual call and had to leave. The EMT took over and showed that kids their fire equipment, and went through a Q and A. Then the kids got to tour an ambulancebans learn about all the gadgets on the truck
