Week 6 Oct 3, Oct 4, Oct 5, Oct 6, Oct 7

Oct 3

Today we had co-op with our Diamond group. We started the day taking class photos, and then moved into geography. In geography River went over the globe/continents and then made her own using a balloon and some coloring pages pasted into the balloon. Next she had drama class where she joined with her playmates to go through their first try at their play Enchanted Forrest including stages directions and setting scenery. River is pretty nervous about her lines, but excited to be with her group.
After lunch the kids had nature-based STEM where they practiced the best way to clean up an oil spill in the ocean. River's team did really well using paper towels, they got their water so clean!

Oct 4

We took it pretty slow today. We practiced letters using our HHM word search and read some more stories to learn about Hispanic heritage and culture.

Oct 5

Today we played with slime and tried different methods to make bubbles, strings, pockets, etc. Tried different methods to manipulate it and see how it changes form. This was an unstructered activity that was led by the kids. We have a library class coming up and are excited to learn more about slime's state of matter and molecules.

Then we did a cut and paste worksheet to review long a and short a sounds.

River decided to do a coloring craft with different paper shapes and tangrams, rainbow themed!

They played sink or float, making tin boats and testing what they could hold, and expiramented with different ways to color the water without food dye. Ha! She was really excited that she finally made a boat that held 10 coins.

In the evening the kids made a terrarium for the tadpoles that have finally turned into frogs. We've been logging things we notice over the last 10-or-so weeks. Kenny helped the kids brainstorm different items they would need to find for the terrarium. They gathered dirt, leaves, sticks, bark, moss, plants, etc. and drilled holes in a pickle jar.

River made a book called Pecky and Ghosty about a bird who finds a ghost, and then more and more ghosts!

Oct 6

Today we gathered with our BU group and the topic of the day was absorbtion. The kids played games at the park and then we gathered to play a game called raindrops and ground (I think?), where there were two groups of kids, raindrops and ground, ground had to make a chain strong like concrete so the raindrops had to go around, or chained by arms length like grass to allow raindrips through. Then we did an activity to show absorbtion: we poured a gallon of water in the grass and on the dirt to track and observe how fast water absorbed. River logged in her BU journal her findings. Another kid found some snake skin and the group passed it around for observation. We played some more with friends before heading to the library. The kids did a library craft making jack-o'-lanterns and played a scarecrows dice game.

We had another frog come out of the water today so we added them to our terrarium.

Oct 7

Today we went to Home Depot for a kids workshop. The kids made water plains and had tons of fun!

We also have a few more frogs and have been observing them today. Some are out of the water but still have tails. So cute! Hopefully we'll be able to make a new terrarium soon.

We reviewed continents and their different attractions, mostly North America, South America, and Europe. There are tons of interesting facts and pictures of historical phenomenons.
